When You’re Not the Only One in Your Family with a Dream

I've been thinking a lot about my personal goals, my children's dreams, and what I want my family to look like. Unfortunately, all three are often in conflict with one another at different times.

I knew from a young age that I wanted to write, and I've never doubted the calling, though I've struggled often with finding the time to pursue my dreams. I started my first novel right after I got married, then I had my first son and writing took a back seat to the demands of mothering.

I didn't know there were writing support groups like ACFW, and I didn't have writing friends to encourage me. I didn't know I could write and raise children like so many do now, though in a way I'm glad I didn't know. It allowed me to focus on my children and hold on to my dreams, knowing that one day my chance would come. So I set aside my WIP for ten years or so, had three more babies and did occasional magazine work. But my heart wanted to return to fiction.

I thought when my fourth child was two that it was finally time to start working on my own dreams of being published. Little did I know was that at the very same time God was calling me to homeschool.

What ensued there after was this stressed out mom trying to learn how to homeschool, be a good mother and write. Unfortunately, I felt like a failure on all three fronts at one time or another, somehow getting off balance at different times until my priorities became so out of whack that I had to sacrifice my writing and dreams for a season. The grieving process was real and painful. But in that grief Writer...Interrupted was birthed, and I started to interview other moms who seemed to do it all.

I grew as a mom and writer.

The other day I read something from Mary M. Byers that resonated with me.

"When you say yes to something in your life, you automatically say no to something else."

I wish I would've understood that sooner. Then maybe I wouldn't have been so anxious to move on to the next stage of my life and career. Maybe I would've savored each moment just a little longer.

Now that my kids are older and have dreams of their own, I'm trying to balance theirs with mine. It's a never ending learning curve as I adjust and evaluate just how much dream pursuit this family can handle. How much I can handle and do before I burn out.

Will there be some regrets and what ifs? Probably, but if I remember that when I'm saying NO to the pursuit of someone's dream (including my own,) I just might be saying YES to something more important!

Reflections on Technology and My Shopping Habits

Fifteen years ago the only cell phone I had was called a car phone and it was in my car—my company car, I might add, and the phone was for company use. I know people sometimes carried those huge, obnoxious phones, but they weren’t very convenient. And again, they were obnoxious. Not many of us carried those and we were still completely dependent on our landlines at home. If you needed to contact someone, you called and left them a message on their answering machine attached to their home phone. No cells. No texting. No nothing.

Just fifteen years ago. Wow.

Funny to think that my children don’t know anything about a time when there wasn’t 24/7 television—Disney Channel or Nick, Netflix on demand shows, DVD’s—the ability to watch a movie over and over! Or video games, and smaller versions on Nintendo DS’s—whatever they are called now. That will probably change before I hit the “publish” button on this post. And they certainly can’t remember a time when we didn’t have a personal computer, a laptop—several of them around the house. I feel so old when I think about how quickly times have changed.

Technology continues to change at even faster rates than before. These wow-times-are-changing fast reflections recently slammed me because of an experience I had while purchasing a book. Since I live in the country I purchase a lot of books, a lot of everything, from Amazon because I have their Prime membership so I get free shipping in two days. TWO DAYS. I can’t get to the store in that time on most days.

Still, I want to support the local brick and mortar stores and decided to put more effort into doing just that. I found a diet book I really wanted because I already had all the other diet books. I decided to drive into town on a day when I had time to make the thirty minute drive and purchase it form Barnes and Nobles. But, I wasn’t at all positive I wanted to buy it until I searched through the contents.

Hence, I purchased it on Kindle first so I could browse through the recipes. Was it a diet book that I could live with? Would my family enjoy the recipes? And after looking at it on my Kindle I decided that definitely yes, we would love the recipes. But cookbooks aren’t something that are all that great as an ebook—just my opinion. So. . .the drive into town to buy the book. Life, laundry, dishes, school, writing, laundry again. . .and I still hadn’t made it to town, or at least all the way across town to Barnes and Nobles. Sheesh—I could have ordered this book and had it three days ago, via Amazon Prime!

Finally, I dropped the boys off at their Royal Rangers meeting and ran a few errands. Walked into Barnes and Nobles and found one copy of the diet book I wanted. On my stroll to the counter I stopped when I noticed the price.

TWENTY-FIVE DOLLARS?! Twenty-five dollars. I can’t remember when I’ve paid that much for a book. Maybe never. All this way, all this resolve so I could be supportive of my local bookstore and they can’t meet me halfway? I mean, I would be willing to buy it—MAYBE—for twenty dollars. Never mind that I can get it for 14.99 via Amazon—a whopping ten dollars less. I know, I know. . .Amazon doesn’t have the overhead. Still, ten dollars more at the bookstore.(Never mind that I had already bought it on Kindle and that plus the hard cover cost through Amazon was more than twenty-five dollars)

With a family of six, I just couldn’t swing twenty-five dollars for a diet book I probably wouldn’t really follow long enough to lose weight. On the drive back to pick up the boys from Royal Rangers, I flipped through my iPhone Apps, looking for Amazon--when I stopped at the light, that is. At the next red light, I surfed for the diet book. The one I just bought on Kindle the week before only now I want it in hard cover. And then. . .I hit buy with one click (or whatever the wording is).

Amazing that in this age of technology, I’m able to buy a book, go shopping, while driving down the road. The whole process I went through to get this book just seems surreal.

Regardless, this year I plan to do a lot of my Christmas shopping at regular stores instead of online like I've done in previous years just to support the local retailers, and I hope they will be willing to meet me halfway.

Spotlight: Lynne Gentry and REINVENTING LEONA

I’m honored to welcome my friend Lynne Gentry, author of REINVENTING LEONA. I met Lynne at a conference several years ago through another close friend, Lisa Harris. But it wasn’t until about two years ago that I really got to know Lynne—she’s not only an incredible person, but she’s an awesome writer. Her voice is exceptional and when I feel like my writing is sagging, I’ll read Lynne’s work to give myself that nudge I need to bump things back up.

Not only does she have an incredible writing voice, she has an amazing talent for characterization, and no wonder, considering her theater background. When I can’t get a handle on my characters, I often ask Lynne and she’s quick to offer assistance. In fact, I credit her with assistance in one of my ideas that recently sold to LIS.

Otherwise titled Baking Bread and Writing Novels

I love baking artisan breads. That’s something you already know if you follow me on Facebook or have read a few of my blog interviews. Baking bread is a hobby I picked up early last spring. I found an article in Mother Earth News magazine that caught my attention. Other than using my bread machine, I’d never baked a loaf the “old-fashioned way.” But I tried this easy recipe and the next thing you know, I was hooked. I bought several books on various bread-baking techniques and I took off experimenting, mixing and matching the various recipes and methods. Knead or no-knead. Slow-fermentation in the refrigerator or over 12-18 hours sitting out. Sour-dough (there’s another story).

You know what I discovered? Start with flour, throw in a little yeast and enough water to make dough and voila, in a few hours you can have the aroma of a bread baking in your home with no more effort than that.

Next I found myself baking bread, trying a new recipe or perfecting an old one, when I should have been working on my deadlines. I say deadlines in the plural because I had overlapping deadlines. Two books due within a few weeks of each other.

But I found that I needed bread-making as a creative outlet—that following a recipe or concocting my own, kneading the dough into a soft ball—actually stimulated my creativity. In that way taking time away from writing to make a loaf of bread (which honestly can be time-consuming) helped me to meet my deadlines. It helped me to be more creative with my stories.

Since I’m a writer, I'm often coming up with analogies or ways that one thing is like another. (Okay, that statement just made me think of the song from Sesame Street). So, how is baking bread like writing a novel?

To write a novel you start with the most basic ingredients—a blank page and writing instrument. (computer or pen/pencil)

To bake bread you start with the most basic ingredients—flour, water, yeast.

I love that in both instances you can start with simple ingredients, bare essentials, to create something wonderful. That's how baking bread and writing a novel are the most alike.

Is that a stretch? I don’t think so. I’m considering writing a few future posts about baking bread and in some cases tying that to better writing or life in general.

Spotlight: A Lasting Impression by Tamera Alexander

A long time ago in a galaxy far far away I met Tammy Alexander in a critique group before either of us was published. She had just joined ACFW, if I remember correctly, and was promptly put into what will always affectionately be known as critique group number five (Waving to my friends who know who they are). We've long since "split" which seems like a harsh word but as each of us became published and we moved on, or time to critique became a rare thing, the group of friends said our goodbyes as an official critique group, but of course we're all still friends on some level. That's how it is in some critique groups--you meet people you instantly click with and share a lot of love and laughs. I know some haven't had that same experience.

I bring this up because I remember the first time I read the manuscript that Tammy submitted to our group. After reading only a few sentences, a paragraph and then a page, I instantly saw that Tammy's voice was far beyond anything I had read in the "learning to craft phase" of a critique group. Tammy had something special and it wasn't long before others took notice. Of course now she is a renown mutli-published award winning novelist.

My point--the first time I met her, Tammy made A Lasting Impression on me.

I'd also like to point out that I want to buy the book based on that gorgeous cover itself--I mean--is that dress beautiful or what?

Redwood Coast

This week I'm working feverishly on my third book in a Heartsong Presents series, which hopefully will be called Redwood Coast. All the stories are set in very Northern California in the coastal redwoods--one of my favorite places in the world.

If I can figure out how to get all those digital photos I took of our hikes off my ancient mac, I'll try to post a few here. As a child I dreamed of visiting the redwood forest but living in Texas never imagined I would end up living so close I could drive there for an afternoon hike. However, I'm back in Texas now and God blessed me with the opportunity to write three stories set in the redwoods.

I received my author copy of the first book in that series, Under the Redwood Tree, this weekend.

Adventures of the Family Kind

And those are the best kind, right? Had a great laid-back weekend. Spent four hours on Saturday delivering kiddoes to soccer games, coaching from the sidelines (though I'm only Mom, not the coach) and hours sitting in the blazing sun watching. I have the sunburn to prove it.

Our dog Dekker (yes, named after Ted and that's another story) had a few adventures of his own. He's one of the neediest creatures I know and quite possibly needs therapy! He can't stand it when anyone leaves and if he manages to escape the house and jump in the car, good luck getting him out.

On the way home from soccer with one of my boys we were a half a mile from the house when we saw Dekker trotting down the road with a look of purpose. He was on a mission all right. He'd escaped the house and gone in search of the minivan. Of course, he passed us on his mission to find us. We stopped at the side of the road and once he realized it was us, raced back to the van. I think his many sucessful escape attempts lately have made him more gutsy when it comes to other things.

After a dinner of roast and potatoes and home made rolls which I labored over all day, I waited for my daughter to return with the few necessary items I needed to wrap and store the food. But when I looked at the table--the roast was mysteriously missing. I thought my husband had stored it away and the next thing you know, we are all searching for the missing roast. Almost as if scripted, together we turned our attention to Dekker who sat there licking his chomps under a mop of a greasy, fury beard. Ew and sigh. He's never done anything like that before and besides--that was a lot of roast. Can't believe he finished it off.

On a good note, I had time to do something I enjoy. I made some crescent rolls. I love the smell of the yeast bread rising, and the aroma when it's baking in the oven. You can see the before (on the left) and the after (on the right.)

I met Vannetta Chapman at the ACFW conference two years ago. I instantly liked her and at this year's conference, seemed like we'd been friends forever.

She writes Amish mysteries for Zondervan and Amish romance for Harvest House. Don't blame her if I got that wrong, and Amish something else for Abingdon.

ACFW Conference Notes--old friends and new

I'm finally getting around to sharing about my conference experience and by now, many of you have probably read all you want to about the conference! I put up a number of pictures on my Facebook page and still need to upload to my author fan page. But things take time and life has been more than hectic since returning.

The great thing about attending the conference is reconnecting with friends. Some I talk to every day via the internet and others I chat with every year at the conference. One of my dearest writing buddies lives several states away from me--but we chat every day. I shared a room with her this year at the conference. Shannon McNear is a great writer and upcoming published author.

Another dear friend, Jill Eileen Smith, has been on this writing journey with me since the beginning. We met early on at the conference when neither of us was published, but we encouraged each other. That's why it's important to connect at a conference--the encouragement will keep you writing.

Jill wanted to get a picture of me with my award--The Camera Never Lies won the Carol Award this year! I was completely stunned and shocked, and also very humbled. The award definitely told me that my mother isn't the only one who enjoyed my story!

I also got a shot with Susan Downs. She was the acquiring editor for mysteries then at Barbour who bought The Camera Never Lies (then named Portrait of a Murder).

Thanks for believing in me Susan! I wish I could have thanked more people during my speech, but since I failed to write one, believing that I wouldn't win, I was blessed to get any words out at all.

I took many more pictures of friends, both old and new and you can view them on my Facebook page. There are just too many to name in this post.

I do want to mention someone I met for the first time and I'm so glad I did. I was recently interviewed on Gate Beautiful, a Blog Talk radio show, coming on right after Judy Gann of Library Insider, and wouldn't you know?--I saw next to her several times at the conference. She's a dear woman who had plenty to share with me about a few things I'm going through right now. Call it a Divine appointment.

Next year's conference is only 50 weeks and counting.

I have found a new favorite author! I admit I haven't read her books before this because I've been caught up reading romantic suspense the last few years, but her characters were unique and interesting, drawing me in completely. During the day, I found myself longing for that moment when I could get back into her story world--and that rarely happens these days. Great characters and exceptional writing kept me hooked. Now reading her previous novels is high on my to do list.

It was during the long Canadian winters at home with her children that Lynn made progress on her dream to write, carving out a few hours of writing time each day while her children napped. East Texas Book Fest

On Saturday I participated in the East Texas Book Fest --a book signing event organized by the SALT (Smith County Public Libraries) and UT Tyler Muntz Library. Over fifty other authors participated as well. My friend, Lena Nelson Dooley, was there to sign books, too. It was great fun seeing her again after this previous weekend at the ACFW Conference in Indianapolis.
My daughter Rachel sat with me at my table to help. A couple of the participants invited Rachel to organize and decorate their tables as well, after admiring what she did with mine.
I believe it was a good event and a few local librarians purchased my books to be included in their school libraries.

Welcome, readers! This is Sunset Sam, columnist for Hollywood Heartthrob magazine, here to interview several characters from LOVE ME TENDER, a new book by author Janice Hanna Thompson. I read the book in preparation for this interview and had a hip-hip hoppin’, be-be-boppin’ time reading about the characters down at Sweet Sal’s Soda Shoppe in Laguna Beach. I’ve been to Sweet Sal’s many times, of course. Everyone in Hollywood knows it’s all the rage. Where else can you get a big, thick cheeseburger, hot, salty fries and the thickest chocolate malts in the country? Now that I’ve enticed you with the food, let’s have a little chat with some of the key players in our story. We’ll start with Debbie Carmichael, daughter of the owners of Sweet Sal’s.

Debbie, could you tell us a little about what your day-to-day life is like?

Most of the girls my age are in college, but I decided to stay in Laguna Beach and help my parents out at our family run soda shop. I have the best life ever! I live across the street from the Pacific Ocean, and love spending time at the cliffs, watching the waves lap the shore. When I’m at the soda shop, the jukebox is always playing. I’m gaga over Elvis’s new song, “Love Me Tender.” It’s all the rage with teen girls right now. Of course, I’m also head over heels for Bobby Conrad, but don’t tell my friends, okay? They think I’m more mature than most of the other teen girls who hang out Sweet Sal’s. Of course, I’m a little distracted by that new guy, Johnny Hartman. He’s so sweet and handsome, and I hear he’s a great singer, too!

Johnny, I read in another article that you came all the way from Topeka Kansas to Hollywood to make it big. How does Hollywood compare to Topeka?

There’s really no way to compare Topeka to Los Angeles. People out here (in California) are more up on current styles, the hottest tunes and the hippest actors and actresses. Back home, folks are so grounded. That isn’t always the case here in L.A. I hope I don’t sound too stuck up when I say that back in Topeka, I was a big fish in a small pond. And because my dad’s a pastor, I had plenty of opportunities to sing in church. But out here in L.A. no one even knows who I am. My agent, Jim Jangles, is working hard to get me a gig on television. I’m auditioning for Arthur Godfrey’s Talent Scouts soon. Say a little prayer for me!

Bobby, I understand you were slotted to sing at the fundraiser at Sweet Sal’s Soda Shoppe, but had to cancel. Could you explain your sudden departure?

Yes, I was scheduled to sing at the fundraiser, but just got word that I’ll be filming my new movie that same weekend. I was really disappointed to have to tell the Carmichaels the news, but hopefully they understand. I think it’s going to be okay, because my agent, Jim Jangles, is sending his latest prodigy—a kid from Topeka named Johnny Hartman—in my place. I hear he’s quite a singer.

Sal, could you tell our readers about some of the Hollywood stars you’ve met over the years?

First of all, thanks for including me in this interview! It’s been decades since I was a teen, but I still secretly read Hollywood Heartthrob magazine. (Shh! Don’t tell my husband, Frankie, or my daughter, Debbie!) I’m blessed to be the co-owner of Sweet Sal’s Soda Shoppe in Laguna Beach, and I’ve met a lot of stars who’ve come through on their way to places like Dana Point and San Diego. Here’s a list of some of my favorites: Doris Day, Gregory Peck, Frank Sinatra, Audrey Hepburn, Lucille Ball, Desi Arnaz, Ozzie and Harriet. There are dozens more, of course. I want to personally invite all of your readers to stop by Sweet Sal’s Soda Shoppe so that they can see the photos on our walls! And while you’re here, why not enjoy a creamy chocolate malt?

Debbie, a little birdie told me that you and the other girls in Laguna Beach are gaga over Elvis, Pat Boone and Bobby Conrad. Now that you’ve gotten to know (and love) Johnny Hartman, what would you say sets him apart from the other great singers you’ve known?

Oh, no doubt about it. . .Johnny isn’t just a great singer, he’s got a heart of gold. I especially love his strong faith. Unlike so many of the other singers in town, he doesn’t put himself first. With Johnny, it’s God first. . .all the way! And when he sings. . .man! That voice! It’s a smooth as velvet. (And it doesn’t hurt that he’s so dreamy! Talk about handsome!)

Johnny, you’ve been asked to fill in for Bobby Conrad at the Laguna Beach fundraiser. Can you tell us how you’re feeling as you look forward to the big day?

I don’t mind admitting I’m a little nervous. Who wouldn’t be? Thousands of girls from Orange County and beyond are looking forward to seeing Bobby Conrad in person. Now I’ve been asked to fill in for him. I’ll be lucky if they don’t boo me off the stage or toss rotten tomatoes at me! Hopefully my new love song—the one I wrote for the gorgeous Debbie Carmichael—will win them over. I hope so, anyway!

Bobby, many Christians have a hard time hanging onto their faith once they achieve stardom. You seem so grounded. What’s your secret?

I always try to honor God in everything I do—whether it’s movies or songs for the radio. There’s a verse that I love, and it’s one I try to live by: “But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.” The way I look at it, if I make a choice to put God first, He’s going to bless me above and beyond anything I could ever ask for, anyway. Even if He didn’t bless me, though, I would still serve Him. It’s really the only way to live a fulfilling life. (And trust me when I say that people out here in L.A. are looking for ways to live a fulfilling life!)

Sal, we were sorry to hear about your husband’s health problems. How is he doing now?

Praise the Lord, Frankie seems to be doing a little better. His heart attack several months ago really shook us up. And we got behind on the mortgage, which has made me a little nervous. Still, I choose to trust God. And now that everyone in town is banding together to put on the fundraiser to save the soda shop, I’m feeling more hopeful than ever!

Debbie, is there anything you’d like Hollywood Heartthrob readers to know as we end this interview?

Yes, I would like people to know that it is possible to live in Hollywood—to be a big star, even—and still be a person of faith. I’ve witnessed it in Bobby Conrad’s life, and in Johnny’s, too. I’d also like to share that putting your trust in God is really the only way to go. Some problems are just too big for us to handle on our own. When my dad got really sick, I made up my mind to try to “fix” the situation. What I’ve learned is this—only God can truly “fix” anything. And trust me when I say that His “fix” is far greater than anything we could ever dream up!

From Susan: I've always loved reading, history, and horses. These things come together in several of my historical books. My young adult novel, Sarah's Long Ride, also spotlights horses and the rugged sport of endurance riding, as does the contemporary romance Trail to Justice. I took a vocational course in horseshoeing after earning a bachelor's degree in history. I don't shoe horses anymore, but the experience has come in handy in writing my books.

Another longtime hobby of mine is genealogy, which has led me down many fascinating paths. I'm proud to be a DAR member! Some of Jim's and my quirkier ancestors have inspired fictional characters.

For many years I worked for the Central Maine Morning Sentinel as a freelancer, covering local government, school board meetings, business news, fires, auto accidents, and other local events, including a murder trial. I've also written many profiles and features for the newspaper and its special sections. This experience was a great help in developing fictional characters and writing realistic scenes. I also published nonfiction articles in several magazines and had several short stories appear in Woman's World, Grit, and Alfred Hitchcock's Mystery Magazine.

My husband, Jim, and I moved to his birth state, Oregon, for a while after we were married, but decided to move back to Maine and be near my family. We're so glad we did. It allowed our six children to grow up feeling close to their cousins and grandparents, and some of Jim's family have even moved to Maine!

Our children are all home-schooled. The two youngest are still learning at home. Jim recently retired from his vocation as an editor at a daily newspaper, and we’ve moved from Maine to Kentucky.

My thoughts: I wasn't feeling well on Saturday so took the opportunity to rest on the couch and read The Gathering Storm. It's been so long since I've had an opportunity to spend a whole day reading a book. Maybe that's why I became so involved in the story, as if I were one of the characters living out the horrors of WWII. There were several moments I pulled myself from the story just to contemplate what I'd read for a while. A few scenes prompted memories and I took time to think on them. While this is unusual for me to do when I'm ensconced in a good story, it simply reflects the way these authors stirred me with their tale--the way they connected with me.

As far as the romance, the historical aspects weighed heavily as you would expect in a Thoene novel and at times, I was a little confused who the main character's romantic interest would be, but in the end, the romance between Loralei and Eben transcended time--literally. Their love was so deeply intimate and spiritual that I haven't stopped thinking about this story.

And nothing says "great novel" better than a story that stays with you days after you've finished reading it.

The heat and wildlife and family time

Had a wonderful time with kiddoes yesterday. We have a yearly pass to the Caldwell Zoo but with the temperatures soaring here--it's was ninety degrees this morning at nine o'clock!-- we opted to visit the Brookshires Wildlife Museum yesterday. The animals were alive--at one time! But at least the building was air-conditioned. I had planned to post a few images here, but the website is in Flash so no can do. From their website, "the museum has over 450 animals on display from various regions of the world."

The boys especially enjoyed the animals from Africa. In the sixties, Mr. and Mrs. Brookshires went on African safaris and brought back the animals to display at the museum. Also featured at the museum is a general store from the 1920's--great for research if you're a historical writer. I couldn't help but notice that as much as things changed, they stayed the same too.

Then we went to the local Dairy Queen for an ice cream cone, then off to the local Christian bookstore--The Scroll--where my soon to be twelve year old son selected a new bible. He didn't want to be seen with his kid adventure bible. While I spent time with the boys, my daughter has been at the AWAM (Arts With A Mission) camp this week. Today they travel to Dallas where they will perform and minister.

I'm trying to take my own advice and balance the writing life. After spending days working on a proposal--and I'm still not finished--I needed a serious break. Though I do plan to write this morning, this afternoon we'll play dinosaur checkers and eat pizza!

At the time, she was transitioning out of her position and the new editor actually acquired the story. In addition to being a prolific writer, Tracie always impressed me with her love for Jesus and how much His light shines from her. Of course, this comes out in her stories as well. Though I haven't yet read Twilight's Serenade, I've read many of Tracie's other novels, and I look forward to posting a review at some point.

Authors That Inspire

Last week I "rejoined" the CFBA blog tour. I was still a member, but I'd stopped receiving books for a while. It's exciting to receive a new book in the mailbox almost every day. I've got some serious reading to do.

A couple of days ago I received a The Gathering Storm by Bodie and Brock Thoene from Summerside Press--their romantic suspense line. I absolutely LOVE their covers.

I was flooded with a rush of memories--you see, my first experience with Christian fiction was twenty or so years ago. I gobbled up the Thoene's Zion Covenant series, loving every minute of them. I learned so much about WW II and developed a love for historical fiction, suspenseful historical fiction, that is. These books also inspired me to write Christian fiction, though it would be many more years before I pursued that dream.

So, when I received this book, I held it to my heart, then thumbed through the pages and breathed in the scent of a new book. Ha! Some will think me crazy, but others of you--you know what I mean.

Of course, next month during their tour spot, I will be posting my review, but I just had to share with you my reaction to receiving this book. When I read the prologue, tears came to my eyes.

I know this book is going to be something special.

MRA Interview with Deborah Vogts

1. How long have you been a published author? – My debut book, Snow Melts in Spring, released in July 2009. It is the first book in the Seasons of the Tallgrass series, which are contemporary inspirational romance books published by Zondervan. Seeds of Summer came out in June.

I wanted to be a writer since I was in high school, and the dream stayed with me all this time. It wasn’t until 2002 that I began taking serious steps to get to the goal. I joined a local writer’s group and an online writing organization, ACFW. I joined a critique group, read writing how-to’s and attended writing conferences. I met my first agent at a national writers’ conference. We hit it off at our meeting, and she gave me some tips on making my book series “bigger.” I did that and submitted my idea to her and she took me on. We shopped my Seasons of the Tallgrass series for a year and had a few bites (one of them Zondervan) but no sale. In the end, she released me, which was a real heart breaker. However, we don’t always see the big picture like God does, and six months later I signed with agent, Rachelle Gardner with WordServe Literary, and we had an offer from Zondervan three months after that.

2. How are the books in the series connected? – The Seasons of the Tallgrass series is connected by the fictional ranching community of Diamond Falls, which is set in fictional Charris County, KS in the heart of the Flint Hills. Each book will stand alone, concentrating on a different season of ranching with a new family of characters, yet readers will see their favorite characters from previous books because they are part of the community.

For example, readers met Clara Lambert in the first book, and will get to read her story in book #3, Blades of Autumn. Also, many readers fell in love with John McCray, the grumpy old dad in Snow Melts in Spring. My plan is to bring him back in the fourth book with a sweet romance of his own. He’ll remain a secondary character, but in this way, I hope to bring the series full-circle to a satisfying end.

3. Are your daughters involved in horses and pageantry? - My husband and I have three daughters, and while we are in 4-H and raise and train American quarter horses, we’ve never had much opportunity for pageantry in this part of Kansas.

4. What inspired you to write this book about a Miss Rodeo Kansas? – My husband and I read lots of horse magazines at our house, two of those, Western Horseman and AQHA’s America’s Horse. So, when he’s finished with a magazine, I’ll go through with an eye for possible story ideas. I’ll tear out pages of articles, or even pictures for possible characters, and then I’ll file those papers in an idea file.

When I’m ready to write a new story, that’s the first place I’ll go, sifting through the articles and pictures. So, to make a long story short, many of the pictures I’d filed away happened to be of past Miss Rodeo America queens. From there, my imagination soared. I began asking questions like, what if this happened? Or what if she did this? Plus, in creating the Seasons of the Tallgrass, each of the stories have a strong female character. For Snow Melts in Spring, you meet Mattie Evans, a large animal veterinarian, and in Blades of Autumn, you’ll read about Clara Lambert as she runs a small town café. I knew I wanted to have one book that had a female rancher in it, and that’s how Natalie’s story was born in Seeds of Summer.

5. Will Natalie appear in future books in the series? – Yes, in the third book, we’ll visit Jared and Natalie again as their December wedding is planned. And then, hopefully, readers will be able to attend the event in the fourth book!

6. What kind of research did you do in preparation for this book? -- A lot of online research, as well as all those articles I mentioned above. I also had a great deal of help from those at the MRA headquarters who answered specific story questions and helped with possible story scenarios.

For instance, for Seeds of Summer, my scenario went like this: What happens when a former Miss Rodeo Kansas (and current MRA first-runner up) is forced to abandon her dreams and return home after her father’s death to care for the ranch and her two half-siblings? Then, just as she’s getting used to the change and her new circumstances, what would she do if she is suddenly called on to be Miss Rodeo America? What about the ranch? What about the kids? And what about the blossoming romance with the new pastor in town?

DeAnna Power, Raeana Wadhams, and Amy Wilson (MRA 2008) all helped a great deal in working out my scenario, as well as answering many small questions that would help lend authenticity to the story.

7. What did you learn about the Miss Rodeo Kansas Program? – Because this part of Natalie’s life has already passed, I focused mainly on the facts. Where is the pageant held? When does her reign begin and end? Where might she go during her reign? How might she be involved after her reign, etc.?

8. What did you learn about the Miss Rodeo America Pageant? – Most of my research dealt with MRA. The story begins in Las Vegas with Natalie losing the pageant or winning first-runner up, depending on how you want to look at it. For her, it was a heartbreaker. Then the story jumps right in to her current dilemma after her father dies and she’s back at the ranch. Not only is she dealing with her father’s death, but also with having to give up her dreams. I dump a lot on this girl at the start of the story, so she has a great deal to overcome. But that’s what memorable stories are made of—people who overcome horrible odds, and become an even stronger person for it.

So back to your question, I learned a ton of information about the MRA—and loved every minute of it. I tacked pictures of past queens in various outfits on my storyboard (which is a bulletin board filled with pictures of my characters, their homes, pets, etc.). And because Amy Wilson was the current MRA, I followed her story online and in magazines, and strange as it may seem, I felt as though I knew her. LOL. My research pinnacled last summer when I met Amy at her home in Colby for an interview. She is such a lovely young woman, and she honored me by showing me her queen items—which again, leant authenticity to my story.

Another thing I especially enjoyed, was viewing the video clips online of the MRA pageant. This helped me so much with the closing of my story. Because I write in close 3^rd person point of view, in my mind, I was living Natalie’s story, so at the end when she is on stage and reliving all that she’s overcome that year, tears just poured from my eyes. I felt like I was there—and I hope you will too. ;)

9. Any surprises you found about rodeo pageants? – Many things, actually. I was surprised at the amount of learning required for the interview portion. Good grief! How do these girls keep all that information in their heads! LOL. I am awed at the amount of expertise required to complete the horsemanship events. Riding with confidence on an animal you’ve never rode before takes a LOT of skill and courage. And carrying those flags, and shining those boots (and blackening the bottoms of those heels). I greatly enjoyed viewing the various leather dresses—and imagining what Natalie would wear. So fun!

10. What do you hope readers will take from this story? – I’d like readers to remember how important family relations are and that we can get through our difficulties if we remember to love and forgive each other. I also hope to give my readers a taste of the Flint Hills and of how God’s beauty rests on the prairie and in the hearts of those who live there. I pray that I’ve created a believable story that will take you through the highs and lows of Natalie’s summer, and that will bring tears of sadness and joy to your eyes. After all, it’s a story about family and love and conflict, and of ranching and horses, that’s topped off with the joy of being a queen. Who wouldn’t love it!!!

11. What are you working on next? - Zondervan contracted me for three books, with options on the fourth. I’m hoping to be able to finish out the seasons with them, and I’m working on the third book, Blades of Autumn now, which will release in summer 2011.

How did you come up with the idea for this novel?

It first started as a “what if” question. What if a mail-order bride showed up in town, expecting to marry the local marshal, but what if he didn’t order her? Then my thoughts morphed a bit. What if three mail-order brides showed up to marry the poor, unsuspecting guy? How could something like that happen? And if it did, what would happen to the women? Then I thought, what if the town held a contest to see with gal would make him the best wife?

That’s pretty much how my idea for The Anonymous Bride originated. I just kept asking “what if” questions and making life harder for my hero.

Tell us about your hero’s journey.

Luke Davis left Lookout, Texas, eleven years ago, right after his fiancée up and married the town’s richest man. He drifted for a year, nursing his broken heart, and then he joined the army, thinking it would keep him away from most women. Now he’s back. He recently became a Christian and believes God has sent him home so that he can forgive the woman who broke his heart and finally put the past to rest. Then maybe he can get on with the rest of his life.

The heroine’s journey?

Rachel Hamilton made a terrible mistake years ago. Now Luke has returned, and she hopes he will forgive her for breaking his heart. But the man seems bent on avoiding her. Now that she’s a widow, she hoped that maybe they could have a second chance. At least she did—until Luke’s three mail-order brides arrived. What in the world is the man thinking?

Who is your favorite hero from books or movies?

From a movie, I’d have to say Indiana Jones. (Although I didn’t care for the second movie in that series) Harrison Ford is my favorite actor, and I love adventure movies. I like Indian Jones’ cocky attitude, fearless taste for adventure, and heart-stopping smile.

Who is the biggest hero in your personal life and why?

My dad is my personal hero. He grew up the youngest of ten kids in a very poor family. I remember him telling me that he sometimes had an onion sandwich for lunch, because that was all there was to eat. He worked hard and was known for having a good heart. He’d give anything he had to someone with a need. One time at church, a man complimented him on his suit coat, and Dad took it off and gave it to him. He wasn’t perfect, but he made me feel special, and I really miss him now that he’s gone.

What do you hope the reader learns from your hero and heroine?

That people can make huge mistakes, but God still loves them and cares about them. Also, my heroine has trouble with her daughter running wild, and feels like she’s not doing a good job. As a mother to four sons, I felt the same way many times. I hope this book will encourage frazzled moms.

If there was something in your life you could change, what would it be and why? I’d be thin.

Closing thoughts to your readers.

I never once thought about writing a book. Then stories started running through my mind like I was watching a movie. After writing my second book, I finally realized God was trying to get my attention. It still boggles my mind that I’ve written multiple books and even won awards for some of them. I want to encourage y’all to open your hearts and minds to God and let Him do something wonderful in your life. His dreams for you are far bigger than you can imagine.
